Gil Elvgren Model Reference Photo-- "Lucky Dog" aka "Dog Gone Robber" (1958)

Gil Elvgren Model Reference Photo-- "Lucky Dog" aka "Dog Gone Robber" (1958). I've featured these Gil Elvgren model reference photos in the past, and here's another one. More to come in the future. This photo is interesting, because it shows a variety of poses. Not sure who the model was for this one.

  1. What a great find! It's really interesting to see the process with which illustrators worked back then. I wonder how many used photos vs. live models vs. just their imagination?

  2. I know Elvgren only used still photos of models for reference. I've seen pictures of other pin-up artists with live models, but I don't know if they took photos of those models and then went from there or if they painted from live models. You'd think the process would take so long that they'd have to rely on photos for at least part of the time. That's a long while to pose!
