War with the Newts

Hardcover edition with dust jacket of a satirical 1936 Czech science fiction novel by Karel Capek. It concerns the discovery of a sea creature called the Newts that is subsequently enslaved by humanity. I haven't read it yet but apparently the Newts rebel hence the "war" mentioned in the title. I do plan to read this one day, but in the meantime, I admire the fantastic deco dust jacket art. I thought this would be a fun book to post, particularly since "V" is coming back to TV in early November.

  1. Appealing, both because of and in spite of the Newt. The green reminds me of an American publisher I once heard explain that in the United States green covers just don't work. This, in reaction to the differences between the UK and US editions of Ellmann's Oscar Wilde.

(I've always assumed that he excluded gardening books.)

  2. Interesting point regarding green covers not selling. I had not heard that before and find that really interesting as a book collector.

  3. it's an excellent book. and really timely now with the oil catastrophe in the Gulf. Consider reading if you haven't yet. I really like this cover.

  5. Hi, do you know the year this edition came out? It's hard to find a good looking cover for this particular book...

  6. I asked my husband (our resident SF expert) and he said it is a UK edition from 1937. Hope that helps!
